THE HAGUE/ZAGREB, Feb 6 (Hina) - Retired General Aleksandar
Vasiljevic, a former head of the Yugoslav People's Army (JNA)
Security Department, on Thursday resumed his testimony at the trial
of former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic at the U.N. war
crimes tribunal in The Hague. #L#
Vasiljevic was the head of the JNA's Security Department in the
1991-1992 period. As a member of the former Serbian and Yugoslav
intelligence system, he is speaking about Milosevic's direct
control over military security services and police.
Up until the very beginning of his testimony, Vasiljevic was
classified as protected witness C039. Vasiljevic, who according to
the prosecution is one of the most important witnesses against the
ex-Yugoslav president, decided to cooperate with the ICTY
prosecution in 1999, after being indicted along with Milosevic as
one of the 15 participants in the crimes.
Even though registered as protected witness until the very last
moment, Vasiljevic appeared in court on Wednesday under his real
identity, stressing he did not need protection neither for himself
nor for his family in Belgrade.
During today's trial, which was on several occasions closed to the
public, Vasiljevic spoke about the arming of Serbs in Croatia in
1990 and 1991 with weapons from JNA warehouses and the warehouses of
the Serb territorial defence, the forming of territorial defence
units and the training of forces in Serbia who were later sent to
battle fields in Croatia.
