ZAGREB, Jan 10 (Hina) - A team of doctors, set up in accordance with
a decision by the Hague-based UN war crimes tribunal, should
examine Croatian general Janko Bobetko in the middle of next week,
the Croatian government stated on Friday. #L#
"According to the information provided by the Prosecutor of the
International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY)
regarding the ICTY trial chamber's decision about the appointment
of a team of court doctors who should examine the condition of
retired general Janko Bobetko, the appointed team of doctors is
expected to conduct the medical examination in Zagreb by the middle
of next week," read the government's statement.
Gen. Bobetko's lawyer Bosiljko Misetic told Hina that he was in
touch with government officials and that he was waiting for
official information about the arrival of the doctors' team.
We shall give our opinion after we receive the information, the
lawyer said.
Following a request by the ICTY Prosecution, the ICTY trial chamber
in mid-December ordered the tribunal's secretariat to establish a
team of experts to examine gen. Bobetko in Zagreb.
The retired general has been in hospital since mid-November after
his health deteriorated.
On 28 November, the Croatian government notified the ICTY that it
could not execute its warrant for his arrest, which is based on the
ICTY's indictment against the general.
The ICTY has indicted the Croatian army's former chief-of-staff for
crimes perpetrated in the 1993 Medak Pocket operation.
To date, the UN tribunal has always sent its teams of experts in case
when a warrant for the arrest could not be executed due to the poor
health of an indictee, and the task of the expert team has been to
verify the findings of local doctors.
