Tomcic offered the five union federation leaders to participate in
the work of parliamentary committees and observe the plenary
session. He also promised that the draft changes to the Labour Act
would not undergo expedited procedure in parliament.
"Today's talks were important progress towards the calming of the
situation and towards the readiness of unions and employers for
further dialogue," Tomcic told reporters after separate talks with
unions and employers.
The unionists voiced hope that contentious issues in the draft
amendments to the Labour Act would be changed before the bill's
second reading in parliament. They added that they continued
preparations for union actions if these issues were not adjusted.
The president of the Croatian Employers' Association, Zeljko
Ivancevic, described the draft amendments as a compromise solution
which would probably need changing again after five years.
MPs should not take into account the arguments of unions which are
thinking short-term, but should adopt the amendments so that
Croatia's economy could become more competitive, Ivancevic said.
