ZAGREB, Jan 20 (Hina) - A two-day seminar on the tenth corridor
organised by the European Transport Workers' Federation (ETF)
began in Zagreb on Monday. It is intended for transport workers'
unions from countries crossed by the corridor which was closed in
the early 1990s, at the start of the Croatian Homeland War. #L#
In attendance are representatives of the ETF, the Economic and
Social Council (ECOSOC), and mainly rail unions from Austria,
Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Macedonia, and Greece -- all ETF
members.
A Helsinki declaration of 1997 described the tenth corridor as one
of the ten priority transport routes linking the European Union and
central and southeast Europe.
The tenth corridor project was launched by a Dutch union of
transport workers and is financed by the Dutch government. Its aim
is to tighten cooperation among unions from countries through which
the route passes, said Vladimir Svalina, president of Croatia's
seamen union.
Croatia's unions coordinate all activities in the project and
today's seminar is the start of a broader action aimed at connecting
similar organisations along the corridor, said Svalina.
