Mikerevic resigned after the High Representative to Bosnia-Herzegovina, Paddy Ashdown, imposed sanctions on the Serb entity on December 16 over its failure to cooperate with the UN war crimes tribunal and announced the abolishment of the defence ministries and police forces of the country's two entities by the autumn next year. Bosnian Serb politicians described this measure as an announcement of changes to the constitutional structures of Republika Srpska and Bosnia-Herzegovina.
