SARAJEVO, Dec 29 (Hina) - A bridge which will go between the Croatianpeninsula of Peljesac and the mainland must be built with dimensionswhich will not obstruct Bosnia-Herzegovina's access to the open sea,Bosnian Transport and Communication Minister, Branko Dokic has said.
SARAJEVO, Dec 29 (Hina) - A bridge which will go between the Croatian peninsula of Peljesac and the mainland must be built with dimensions which will not obstruct Bosnia-Herzegovina's access to the open sea, Bosnian Transport and Communication Minister, Branko Dokic has said.

Dokic was quoted by the 29 December issue of the Sarajevo-based Dnevni Avaz daily as saying that the height of arches must be appropriate so as to make it possible for Bosnia to have unimpeded access to the open sea, given that Bosnia is entitled to this right in compliance with international conventions.

Croatia is planning to build a bridge between its mainland and the peninsula of Peljesac so as to bypass the stretch of Bosnian territory at the Adriatic coast (the Neum area) and make it possible for its nationals from the south of the country to have direct road connections with the rest of Croatia.

"I am sure that Croatia will build a bridge with dimensions, which are determined by international conventions. This is certain in light of the fact that Croatia is coming nearer and nearer to Europe day by day and it cannot afford the building of a bridge which would damage the serious reputation of Croatia as a partner of Brussels," Dokic said.

The minister went on to say that it would be necessary to ask Sarajevo to greenlight the construction of the bridge in question with dimensions not in accordance with international rules.

Dokic said his ministry was also expecting of Croatia to consult Bosnian authorities also about plans to build a section of the motorway towards the southern city of Dubrovnik, as the section might pass through a 30-kilometre border area. He, however, added that no concrete projects had yet been drawn regarding that section and its accurate direction.

Dokic said he had already discussed the matter with Croatian Prime Minister Ivo Sanader and his Croatian counterpart Bozidar Kalmeta, and expressed confidence that Croatia would do nothing contrary to international conventions.
