PLETERNICA, Dec 27 (Hina) - Presidential candidate Anto Kovacevic, who on Monday held a rally in the eastern town of Pleternica, said that Croatia was free and sovereign only as much as it was economically independent.

"There is no future without production, without jobs for young people and without exports. Every Croatian, every citizen must be able to earn a living in their homeland," Kovacevic said presenting his platform.

He spoke abut the polarisation in the society between the rich and those who can hardly make ends meet.

According to Kovacevic, the basic problem is a moral crisis which generates all other sorts of crises.

Commenting on Croatia's bid to join the European Union, Kovacevic said that "Europe needs Croatia and that's why Croatia should not kneel and beg".

"It is not true that if Ante Gotovina (the runaway general wanted by the UN war crimes tribunal) surrenders, Croatia will enter the EU. Croatia should not dash headlong into the EU, like it had dashed into (former) Yugoslavia," Kovacevic said.

Reiterating that in case he became a new Croatian president he would set up an office for relations with Bosnia-Herzegovina and the Croat people in that country, Kovacevic said that he was the only presidential candidate who was in favour of Croatia and Bosnia entering together the EU.
