We made three successful steps in foreign affairs: in April we received a positive response (avis) to our European Union membership application, in July we were given the status of candidate and in December were were given the exact date for opening membership talks without additional conditions, Sanader said at a Christmas and New Year reception he gave for reporters in Zagreb on Friday.
He went on to say that the above-mentioned successes would have a significant impact on Croatia's internal affairs.
The prime minister also spoke about good macroeconomic results, and highlighted the importance of the media in a democratic society.
The right to information is a fundamental right in a democracy, Sanader said adding that along with the freedom of the media, the sense for being responsible for what is said and written should also be developed.
On behalf of accredited reporters who cover the work of the government, journalist Olga Ramljak thanked Sanader and his ministers for their best wishes for the forthcoming holidays.
