ZAGREB, Dec 13 (Hina) - Croatian President Stjepan Mesic on Monday submitted to the State Election Commission his presidential candidacy which was supported with more than 200,000 signatures.

Asked why he believed that he would win another presidential term, Mesic told reporters that he had fulfilled his promises in his first term - he helped Croatia open up to the world and democratise and he helped its institutions to start functioning.

Mesic said that if he was re-elected, his priority would be to help Croatia's economy transform from an import into an export-oriented one.

Another priority will be the adoption of European standards, which will guarantee Croatia's admission to the European Union as a full member, Mesic said.

Asked whether he expected a second election round, Mesic said that he would like the elections to be completed in the first round.

Mesic was accompanied by the leaders of opposition parties which support his candidacy - the Social Democratic Party (SDP), the Peasant Party (HSS), the People's Party (HNS), the Istrian Democratic Assembly (IDS), Libra, the Liberal Party (LS), the Primorje-Gorski Kotar Alliance (PGS), and the Party of Democratic Action (SDA).
