ZAGREB, Dec 9 (Hina) - The parliamentary committee on human rights and ethnic minorities' rights has issued a press release on the occasion of International Human Rights Day, which is observed on 10 December.

Committee chairman Furio Radin said that unemployment presented a form of gross violation of individuals' rights and that many labour rights had not yet been ensured.

Retirees also do not exercise their rights, while the rights to public health should undergo radical changes, read the press release.

Women are still not equal with men, although great efforts are being made so as to improve this situation.

Housing rights are also a specific problem, notably issues related to the accommodation of returnees. The committee recommends that this problem be solved with special sensitivity and in keeping with the belief that everybody has the right to be provided with housing.

The committee also holds that sexual minorities should be able to exercise their rights as this is an indicator of a mature civil society.

The committee believes that ethnic minorities' rights are incorporated into the foundations of Croatia's development as an European country, which is why it welcomes any progress made in the exercise and protection of national minorities' rights.
