ZAGREB, Dec 9 (Hina) - Prime Minister Ivo Sanader on Thursday resolutely rejected an article in Nacional weekly about his involvement in the alleged surveillance of President Stjepan Mesic by secret services, and said that it showed which side the weekly had chosen to support during the election campaign.

"I resolutely reject and deny that. Those insinuations are completely unfounded and unacceptable," Sanader said at a Government session, calling for respect for basic human rights, the law and the Constitution.

The Prime Minister spoke of domestic problems in the context of December 17 when the EU is to decide on the start of membership talks with Croatia. He said he hoped problems such as the scandal surrounding the Counterintelligence Agency (POA) would be resolved in accordance with the Constitution and the Security Services Act.

Sanader said that the interrogation of free-lance journalist Helena Puljiz by POA agents was part of an operation aimed at combating organised crime, but stressed that such course of action was wrong.

Sanader announced that POA Director Josko Podbevsek was expected to submit a report today, and that he would decide on the case and inform the public on Friday. He noted that before making the decision he would discuss the matter with Mesic.
