ZAGREB, Nov 29 (Hina) - Deputy Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor said on Monday that the case of the Counterintelligence Agency should be resolved as soon as possible through an agreement between the President of the Republic and the Prime Minister.

Kosor told reporters that President Stjepan Mesic should not have put Prime Minister Ivo Sanader before a fait accompli, "all the more so because the two have successfully resolved several cases so far."

"Putting (the prime minister) before a fait accompli will lead to a stalemate, which is not good if problems are really to be solved," Kosor said during a visit to an institution for the rehabilitation of disabled persons through employment.

Kosor said it would be logical if the President and the Prime Minister considered the facts and reached an agreement before countersigning a decision to relieve Josko Podbevsek of his duties as POA director, because it was also their constitutional obligation to consult each other.

Speaking as the ruling Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) party's presidential candidate, Kosor said that she would never put the Prime Minister before "a take-it-or-leave-it act".

Kosor said she expected Prime Minister Sanader, who has the duty to protect the institution of prime minister and the government as a whole, to respond to Mesic's behaviour.

"I hope the situation will be over soon and that a solution will be found," she said, adding that the only solution was dialogue and agreement between the President and the Prime Minister.

Commenting on the case of free-lance journalist Helena Puljiz, who had been interrogated by POA agents for five hours, Kosor said she did not have enough information to make an assessment of the case.

Asked if it similar cases could be expected to happen if she became president, Kosor replied: "Absolutely not."
