ZAGREB, Dec 8 (Hina) - The Prime Minister and leader of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) party, Ivo Sanader, resolutely rejects the insinuation by the opposition People's Party (HNS) about any kind of political trade in connection with inquiry commissions, the HDZ said in a statement on Wednesday evening.

The HDZ's press release was prompted by a statement by HNS leader Vesna Pusic earlier on Wednesday that she had learned of the intention by the HDZ and its president, Ivo Sanader, to abandon parliamentary initiatives aimed at setting up commissions of inquiry.

The HDZ underlined that Prime Minister Sanader "supports the establishment of all inquiry commissions", saying that the aim of those commissions was to protect the law rather than score petty political points, and adding that Sanader "personally has nothing to be afraid of".

The statement said that the HDZ wanted to ensure that a request for establishing a commission to investigate the work of security services, which had been submitted into parliamentary procedure by the opposition, was withdrawn, because it considered it "grist to the mill of those criticising Croatia for incomplete cooperation with the Hague tribunal in anticipation of a decision by the European Council on a date for the start of entry talks".

The HDZ said that "a political consensus should be reached on Croatia's admission to the European Union as a strategic priority rather than score cheap political points to the country's detriment".
