BANJA LUKA, Dec 8 (Hina) - Ex-Bosnian Serb police director Dragomir Njegus, who on December 1 resigned to pre-empt being dismissed from the post, has been appointed assistant to Bosnia-Herzegovina's Deputy Security Minister Dragan Mektic, the Banja Luka press said on Wednesday.

The document on Njegus's appointment is dated November 30. He took the new office the same day he resigned from his previous post.

The Bosnian Serb entity's interior minister, Darko Matijasevic, has urged entity Prime Minister Dragan Mikerevic on a number of occasions to fire Njegus because of "noncooperation with the Hague tribunal".

The decision to appoint Njegus to the new post was signed by Bosnian Security Minister Barisa Colak.

The Banja Luka daily Nezavisne Novine quoted Bosnian PM Adnan Terzic as saying he would request that the decision on Njegus's new appointment be revoked.

"I have never meddled with ministers' decisions on their advisors, but I think that in this case Colak and Mektic need to explain their actions," said Terzic.

He said that a person who in his capacity as police director had not done a good job in the arrest of war crimes indictees could hardly be a good choice for the state security ministry. He added that Njegus's appointment to a ministry expected to fully contribute to cooperation with the Hague war crimes tribunal was contradictory.

Mektic told Nezavisne Novine "there's nothing contentious" in his choice of Njegus, adding that if there was at least one legal obstacle to the appointment he would withdraw the appointment decision. He added institutions which evaluated the level of cooperation with the UN tribunal had consented to the appointment.
