ZAGREB, Nov 25 (Hina) - Parliament on Thursday resumed a debate on reports by the Croatian Radio and Television's (HRT) Directorate and Programmes Council for the November 2003-June 2004 period. All clubs of deputies endorsed the reports but were critical of the TV programmes.

The opposition Social Democrats (SDP) endorsed both reports. Antun Vujic said the Programmes Council had made headway and remained autonomous and stable despite pressure, crises, and scandals.

Ingrid Anticevic-Marinovic objected to the criticism of the national television network by some MPs. "Some of us evidently still don't understand what public television is. The HRT must be protected from politics and financial blackmail, and everything else should be left up to journalists, editors and journalism regulatory bodies."

Frano Piplovic of the Social Liberals/Democratic Centre (HSLS/DC) club said that TV journalists and editors too frequently highlighted incidents and scandals at the expense of Parliament coverage. He added the HSLS/DC club had recently proposed establishing a so-called parliamentary TV.

Speaking on behalf of the club of deputies representing ethnic minorities, Zdenka Cuhnil voiced dissatisfaction with the lack of programmes which would systematically deal with minorities.

The ruling Croatian Democratic Union's (HDZ) deputies criticised the TV programmes, saying they did not cover culture, education and ethnic minorities sufficiently.
