MIKSIC: IF I WIN PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION, GEN. GOTOVINA WILL BE A FREE MAN

ZAGREB, Dec 4 (Hina) - Independent presidential candidate Boris Miksic said at a news conference on Saturday that if he was elected president, General Ante Gotovina would be able to walk freely in Croatia.

Miksic dedicated most of the conference to the case of the runaway Croatian general who was indicted by the UN war crimes tribunal in The Hague.

He recalled that Gotovina was his friend and that the two of them had cooperated in 1996 on the Partnership for Peace project regarding military cooperation between the US state of Minnesota and the Croatian army.

Miksic objected to Croatian politicians being too complying and responsible for the loss of patriotic pride and dignity.

The United States was on Croatia's side during Operation "Storm", while some European countries, primarily Great Britain and France, were on the side of Milosevic's Serbia, Miksic said, adding that Great Britain and France were trying to discredit the US policy.

"The indictment against General Ante Gotovina is a political indictment, not a legal one. According to it, all generals of victorious armies should be prosecuted."

Miksic also said that Croatia should not allow foreign fishing boats exploit the Croatian sea. He criticised the Druzba Adria project which he said would cause an ecological disaster because it would be used for the transport of the most harmful and least ecologically acceptable oil from Siberia.
