ZAGREB, Dec 2 (Hina) - The Media Council of the Croatian Helsinki Committee for Human Rights (HHO) said on Thursday that the case of journalist Helena Puljiz showed that Croatia did not have an adequate control of the work of security services and was lacking legal mechanisms which would prevent the politicisation of those services and possible misuses on time.

The HHO says it is necessary to analyse laws and regulations organising the security sector from the position of the protection of human rights and the independence of journalism, including the right of members of the Council for the Civil Control of Security Services to directly address the public if human rights have been violated.

The HHO Media Council said in a statement that information about the Puljiz case and criticism from the public point to the need that parliament must change the composition of the Committee on Home Affairs and National Security in a way that the chairman of the Committee always comes from the Opposition ranks, in line with the European democratic practice.

The HHO is confident that the Puljiz case was caused by a lack of will and inability of the parliamentary majority to ensure an efficient control of the work of security services and prevent misuses.
