BELGRADE, Dec 1 (Hina) - Serbian Interior Minister Dragan Jocic said on Wednesday afternoon that there was no attempt on the life of President Boris Tadic, but the incident which happened on Tuesday evening should be characterised as a traffic accident.

The embassy of the United States in Belgrade notified the Serbian Interior Ministry that the Audi 80 car which was engaged in the accident when it hit a car in the column of cars of President Tadic, had been driven by an employ in the embassy's security. That driver, Miroslav Cimpl, is a citizen of Serbia-Montenegro.

"From the belief that it was an assassination attempt we came to the conclusion that it was a traffic accident," the minister said at an extraordinary news conference in Belgrade.

He added that the driver of the Audi 80 car got nervous seeing the way how the column was driving and was scared after he realised that there were rotating lights and after he hit the last car in the column.

Asked by reporters why the ministry needed over 15 hours to complete and publish any report on the event and more than 24 hours to hold a news conference, the minister replied that he could not understand their nervousness.

He announced more reports on the further course of the investigation in the matter.
