ZAGREB, Nov 24 (Hina) - The Croatian government on Wednesday rejected the first 50 amendments to the 2005 draft budget submitted by MPs, who mostly requested more funds for areas of special state interest.

Explaining the decision to turn down the amendments, Finance Minister Ivan Suker said that this year the state had given up on more than 800 million kuna in income and profit tax to the benefit of areas of special state interest, which he said was much more money than sought with the amendments.

Alenka Kosisa Cicin-Sain of the People's Party (HNS) criticised the government for providing less funds for formerly war-hit areas because it believed that it would lose the next local elections in those areas.

Ljubica Lalic of the Peasant Party (HSS) was dissatisfied with the rejection of her amendment proposing a 10 million kuna increase in funds intended for protection against hail.

The government also rejected some 20 amendments by Social Democrat Nenad Stazic who requested several hundred thousand kuna more for permanent allowances for prominent scientists, writers, composers, architects and artists who he said were receiving the lowest pensions.

He called on Minister Suker to provide those funds by re-distributing funds for the government's "Open Doors" promotion project.

The finance minister also rejected an amendment by Jozo Rados of Libra who sought 45 million kuna for the establishment of an Osijek-Baranja agro-bank, and the Party of Rights' (HSP) amendment on transferring 32 million kuna of Defence Ministry funds intended for international cooperation and officials trips to the coast guard.

The government also rejected an amendment by Alenka Kocisa Cicin-Sain of the HNS seeking a four million kuna increase in funds for the control of the government's work.
