ZADAR, Nov 19 (Hina) - The Zadar City Council on Friday decided with a majority vote to rename Mile Budak Street the Street of Croatian Writers.

In a heated debate councillors of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) proposed that Mile Budak Street be renamed Vlado Gotovac Street after the late president of the Liberal Party and prominent writer. As their proposal was turned down, they walked out of the session, accompanied by councillors of the Croatian People's Party (HNS) and some independent councillors. The City Council continued with the session since most councillors remained.

During the debate, councillors of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) admitted that they were voting for changing the street name against their will and due to pressure that was being exerted on Croatia and a report which the chief prosecutor of the UN war crimes tribunal, Carla del Ponte, would submit to the UN Security Council.

Mile Budak was a senior official of the Ustasha regime in Croatia during World War II and writer.
