The spokesman for the ministry, Dobroslav Silobrcic, told Hina the ministry was checking media reports on financial wrongdoings which Bucan, a candidate for the economic advisor at the Croatian consulate general in New York, allegedly committed while he was director of the Croatian branch of the US drug company.
"We are investigating the case due to the press reports. If everything is all right, Bucan will start working at the Croatian consulate in New York," Silobrcic said.
The Croatian media have recently reported that the Pfizer main office in the United States has launched a probe into the sale of its products in Croatia on suspicion that irregular payments of large amounts of money were made in its Zagreb branch. The media report that Bucan and Pfizer Croatia are suspected of giving bribes to Croatian doctors persuading them to prescribe Pfizer drugs. The US company also informed the investigating bodies in America and Croatia about this.
Silobrcic said that Bucan was not an employee of the Croatian ministry and had not signed a contract on his diplomatic service in New York yet.
The spokesman explained that Bucan was nominated because of his knowledge and skills, however, the final decision would be made after the investigation was completed.
