OSIJEK, Nov 6 (Hina) - Prime Minister Ivo Sanader on Saturday visited Josip Juraj Strossmayer University in the eastern city of Osijek, where he supported this institution's development projects.

Sanader was accompanied by Education Minister Dragan Primorac, Defence Minister Berislav Roncevic, and Finance Minister Ivan Suker.

Sanader said there was no progress without science, which was why education and science would receive seven percent more funds in next year's national budget.

"Science and young people are the future of development here, where the (1990s) war left deep consequences. Our task is to keep Croatian youth and enable them to have a good education and jobs because we have all the requirements to make Croatia as attractive for young people as Switzerland, America, Germany, or Austria," said the PM.

He added admission to the European Union was important because Croatia must participate in decision-making concerning Europe's future. "Of course, the EU is not ideal, but we will enter it, swim with them and together fight for our interests."

Sanader today visited a university in his capacity as PM for the first time. He said he chose the Osijek university because he planned to visit it in 1992, when he was minister of science and technology.

"Back then, as now, I supported the balanced development of all Croatian regions... The opening of the Croatian Food Agency in Osijek, and not in Zagreb as initially planned, is another proof of the balanced development of all our regions."

The press asked the education minister if elementary and high school employees would go on strike. Primorac said he did not expect that to happen, announcing a meeting with union representatives on Monday.

The prime minister declined to comment on current events, primarily the conflict of interest allegations involving Foreign Minister Miomir Zuzul. Government spokesman Ratko Macek said Sanader would give a statement tonight.
