HUMAN RIGHTS ACTIVISTS: ANTI-CROAT SENTIMENT STILL SPREAD IN SERBIA

SUBOTICA, Nov 4 (Hina) - In Serbia there is still a high degree of anti-Croatian sentiment, which affects attempts to solve the status of ethnic Croats in the country, the Helsinki Human Rights Committee in Serbia said in a report.

"Croats in Vojvodina are not sufficiently involved in decision-making processes, and they are poorly represented in public and state administration, notably in the police, the army, the judiciary, customs administration and state-run companies," Tomislav Zigmanov, one of the authors of the latest report compiled by the committee, told Hina on Thursday.

The segment of the comprehensive report referring to the position of the Croatian minority reads that Croats, as well as Albanians, are constantly portrayed in negative stereotypes, which generates intimidation and insecurity mong Croats.

"The Croatian minority has been stripped of any social power over the 15 years," the report reads.

The report recalls that Vojvodina Croats were again subjected to acts of provocation and incidents at the start of last year.

This nongovernmental organisation said in the report that during the 1990s "between 35,000 and 40,000 Croats were forced to leave Vojvodina due to the strong anti-Croat propaganda".

After some positive changes in the first years of rule of the DOS coalition of the democratic parties, "a negative trend in the treatment of ethnic minorities" is now again at work in Serbia, the NGO said in the report.
