CROATIAN PM URGES CONCLUSION OF NEW AGREEMENT ON PLOCE PORT

KLEK, Nov 3 (Hina) - The Croatian Prime Minister has said that a newagreement with the Bosnian Croat-Muslim Federation on the use of thesouthern Croatian seaport of Ploce should be drawn up because "everyinternational agreement should be fair, and the existing agreement onPloce Port makes an impression of unfairness".
KLEK, Nov 3 (Hina) - The Croatian Prime Minister has said that a new agreement with the Bosnian Croat-Muslim Federation on the use of the southern Croatian seaport of Ploce should be drawn up because "every international agreement should be fair, and the existing agreement on Ploce Port makes an impression of unfairness".

PM Ivo Sanader said this after he visited the Russian ship 'Bavenit' which is engaged in the exploration of the sea in the area from Komarna to Peljesac where a future bridge should be built connecting the southernmost part of Croatia with the rest of the country.

Sanader said the Ploce agreement was a part of the package regulating special relations between Croatia and Bosnia's Croat-Muslim entity. This model of relations was annulled in 2001.

"That agreement should be revised and a new one should be drawn up," Sanader said on Wednesday.

He went on to say that Croatia was willing to grant Bosnia-Herzegovina the status of the most privileged country in the use of Ploce Port, as that country used 90 percent of that second-biggest Croatian seaport, and announced more talks on the matter.

The Croatian PM is satisfied with the course of the exploration of the sea between the town of Komarna on the mainland and the peninsula of Peljesac.

Sanader added that the construction of the bridge would start immediately after the announcement of the findings of the ongoing tests on the sea-bed in January next year.

The PM described the future 2,300-metre-long bridge, which will be the longest bridge in Croatia, as a historic project making it possible for Croatian citizens to travel from one part of the country to the other without passports.

The bridge will actually bypass the Bosnian stretch of the Adriatic Coast around the town of Neum, which separates the Croatian south from the rest of the country.

According to some estimates, the entire project will cost between 100 and 300 million euros. The final price depends on the the depth at which the solid foundation for the start of the construction would be found.

Sanader said the construction of the bridge would not hinder the project of building the highway from Split to Ploce, as these were two parallel projects which did not exclude one another.

The bridge will be a part of the 139-kilometre fast road towards the city of Dubrovnik.
