SLUNJ, Nov 3 (Hina) - Police in the central Croatian town of Slunj (some 80 kilometres south of Zagreb) on Tuesday evening removed a plaque commemorating Jure Francetic, set up by as yet unknown persons at the same location from where a previous memorial plaque honouring the Ustasha officer was removed in line with the Croatian government decision of August 27, 2004.

The plaque, which reads "To Croatian Knight Jure Francetic, Otocac, July 2, 1912", was removed in line with a decision by the Ministry for Environmental Protection, Zoning and Construction, Karlovac County police department spokesman Tomislav Kotic said.

The police are collecting information on the perpetrators and the time when the plaque was erected, Kotic said.

Government spokesman Ratko Macek yesterday said that the government most strongly condemned the setting up of the memorial plaque.
