VUKOVAR, Oct 25 (Hina) - The Vukovar County Court on Monday renewed proceedings against 10 local ethnic Serbs charged with committing war crimes against civilians in the village of Bapska during the Serb-occupation of eastern Croatia in the first half of the 1990s.

The accused are Zlatan Kulic (born 1960), Nikola Teodorovic (1952), Miodrag Simeunovic (1960), Dragoljub Savicin (1939), Rajko Milosevic (1959), Ranko Sljubura (1947), Drago Vuckovic (1967), Mihajlo Mijatovic (1951), Goran Mijatovic (1968) and Radojko Radmilovic (1974).

The indictment says that "by accepting the illegally established occupying military, police and civilian authorities in Bapska, from 1992 to May 1995 they ill-treated the majority Croatian population with the intent to expel it from Bapska."

For this purpose they allegedly conducted a campaign of intimidation, looting and violence, and in May 1995 they expelled the remaining 69 Croats from their homes on pain of death and settled Serbs from Western Slavonia.

All the accused are being tried in absence.

On the first day of the trial on Monday the trial chamber, presided over by Judge Nikola Besenski, heard testimonies by five witnesses, who reiterated their earlier statements about the threats and harassment they and their families had been subjected to during the occupation of Bapska and about their ultimate expulsion.

All the accused were already tried by the same court at the end of the year 2000 and the beginning of 2001. All were sentenced to five years in prison except Rajko Milosevic, who received a six-year prison term. However, the verdicts were quashed by the Croatian Supreme Court on defence appeal.
