ZAGREB, Oct 12 (Hina) - The Croatian Supreme Court said in a statement on Tuesday it had upheld an appeal by the Split County Prosecutor and ordered that eight former military police officers charged with war crimes in the Lora case be remanded in custody.

The Supreme Court decision was reported by the media already on Monday after it was said that the accused would be tried again before a special war crimes chamber.

According to sources close to the accused, the police and the court, the police visited the homes of all the accused on Monday and arrested at least five of them. Those arrested were reportedly taken to the Split County Prison, but the information was not officially confirmed either by the police or the court.

The acquitting sentence rendered by the Split County Court trial chamber presided over by Judge Slavko Lozina in 2002 was repealed by the Supreme Court towards the end of August this year, which then ordered a renewal of the trial before a different panel of judges.

The new war crimes trial chamber will consist of Presiding Judge Spomenka Tonkovic and Judge Josip Cule and Judge Neven Cambi as members.

The eight former military policemen -- Tihomir Duic, Miljenko Bajic, Josip Bikic, Tonci Vrkic, Davor Banic, Emilio Bungur, Ante Gudic and Andjelko Botic -- are charged with committing war crimes against Serb prisoners in the Lora military prison outside Split in 1992.

The date of the trial has not been set yet.
