When I talked to representatives of the Croatian government this spring I believed that Gotovina would be arrested before the summer holidays, but that did not happen and I am very disappointed, del Ponte told a news conference after giving the Council of the European Union her assessments of cooperation of former Yugoslav countries with the ICTY.
I hope Croatia will locate Gotovina by the end of next month, because I will submit a report to the UN Security Council on November 23, del Ponte said.
She said she was informed that Gotovina was seen at a beach on the Adriatic coast this August.
Asked whether she would be disappointed if the European Council set a date in December for the start of negotiations with Croatia despite the fact that Gotovina was not yet arrested, del Ponte said she did not want to be involved in political issues.
I am a prosecutor and I do not wish to be involved in political issues, but I would like to see results, the apprehension of a fugitive, she said. Croatia must arrest Gotovina and I am confident the country will act accordingly, del Ponte said.
She stressed she could not say in advance what she would tell the UN Security Council about Croatia's efforts to arrest general Gotovina.
I am closely watching what the Crotian government is doing to locate the fugitive general and I will be able to report whether what Croatia has done is good or bad, she said.
