CROATIAN PM SAYS HIS PARTICIPATION IN UN GENERAL ASSEMBLY SESSION SUCCESSFUL

NEW YORK, Sept 23 (Hina) - Croatian Prime Minister Ivo Sanader toldreporters on Thursday that his participation in the 59th session ofthe UN General Assembly in New York was successful and stressed thatthe session was used for a number of bilateral talks, the promotion ofCroatia and the strengthening of its international position.
NEW YORK, Sept 23 (Hina) - Croatian Prime Minister Ivo Sanader told reporters on Thursday that his participation in the 59th session of the UN General Assembly in New York was successful and stressed that the session was used for a number of bilateral talks, the promotion of Croatia and the strengthening of its international position.

Sanader was the first Croatian PM to hold a speech before the UN General Assembly in New York. Addressing the General Assembly on Wednesday, Sanader, among else, explained Croatia's candidacy for nonpermanent membership of the UN Security Council in the 2008-2009 period.

He told reporters that Croatian Foreign Minister Miomir Zuzul's recent visit to the summit of Non-Aligned countries was a good move and that he received promises from a number a countries that they would support Croatia's candidacy for the Security Council.

The PM informed reporters of a number of bilateral meetings he held on the margins of the annual session of the UN General Assembly. He particularly emphasised his talks with Portuguese Prime Minister Pedro Miguel de Santana Lopes and Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin.

Sanader and Martin tackled the issue of the Canadian visa regime for Croatian citizens. Sanader said the talks also focused on the two countries' economic cooperation.

Sanader said he will travel to Pittsburgh on Sunday to attend a ceremony marking the 110th anniversary of the Croatian Fraternity Union.
