CROATIA AND GERMANY AGREE COOPERATION IN RECONSTRUCTION OF AFGHANISTAN

NEW YORK, Sept 21 (Hina) - Croatia and Germany have signed a jointdeclaration on civilian cooperation as part of a German reconstructionteam in Afghanistan.
NEW YORK, Sept 21 (Hina) - Croatia and Germany have signed a joint declaration on civilian cooperation as part of a German reconstruction team in Afghanistan.

The declaration was signed in New York on Monday by Croatian Foreign Minister Miomir Zuzul and his German counterpart Joschka Fischer.

Croatia will send civilian staff, one diplomat and two police experts to the German mission as of November 2004, according to a joint written statement that was distributed to reporters after the signing ceremony.

Croatia is committed to a long-term contribution in reconstruction aid, which can be adjusted in size and substance according to mission requirements, the statement says.

The aim of the provincial reconstruction team in Feyzabad, which operates as part of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan, is to provide support to provincial authorities and assist in stabilising the area, paving the way for reconstruction.

The establishment of a second German provincial reconstruction team in Feyzabad, which is due to start operating soon, is aimed at strengthening the international presence in Badakhsan province.

Croatia is already involved in the military component of the international mission, with a military police unit deployed in the German zone, and now it will expand its cooperation to include civilian projects.

Germany highly appreciates this contribution by Croatia as significant support to the civilian mission of the provincial reconstruction team, and this German-Croatian cooperation underlines efforts to stabilise and rebuild Afghanistan ahead of the country's first presidential election scheduled for October 9, the statement says.

Zuzul arrived in New York on Monday as part of a Croatian delegation led by Prime Minister Ivo Sanader to attend the annual session of the UN General Assembly.
