MESIC SAYS MARKAC AND CERMAK WILL REMAIN IN HAGUE BECAUSE OF GOTOVINA

PAZIN, Sept 15 (Hina) - Croatian President Stjepan Mesic said in Pazin on Wednesday he was in possession of unofficial information to the effect that the decision of the UN war crimes tribunal not to grant provisional release to generals Ivan Cermak and Mladen Markac pending trial was affected "by the fact that General Ante Gotovina is at large".

During today's visit to Istria County, Mesic said he believed that all state organs, especially the police, had done their job. "Everything that has been done so far indicates that General Ante Gotovina is not in Croatia," he said.

It is not only up to Croatia to make Gotovina appear before the tribunal, this also requires the involvement of bodies of other countries, Mesic said.

"Now that we have Blaskic's verdict, I believe that it could motivate Gotovina to answer the tribunal's questions. That verdict in principle answers the question of command responsibility and states that the causal relationship between the crime and the commander must be proven," Mesic said.

General Gotovina should study the Blaskic verdict and answer the tribunal's questions, he added.

Addressing reporters after separate meetings with members of the Istria County leadership and World War Two anti-fascist fighters, Mesic said he agreed with Prime Minister Ivo Sanader's claim that the kuna was stable.

"However, we must agree with the fact that our imports are twice as big as our exports," he said commenting on reports that he and Sanader disagreed about the kuna exchange rate and that he believed that the national currency was too strong while Sanader believed it was stable and needed no changing.

An expert discussion on this issue should be held, after which decisions should be made to boost production and exports and limit imports, he said.

Commenting on the Slovene Interior Ministry's claim that the middle of the Bay of Savudrija was never the delimitation line as claimed by Croatia, Mesic said that according to international conventions the borderline

was defined as the middle line if not determined otherwise.

Mesic said that at his meeting with WWII anti-fascist fighters he supported their requests to receive the same treatment as participants in the Homeland War.

"Participants in the Homeland War defended Croatia, anti-fascist fighters created it. That is their position with which I agree," Mesic said.

President Mesic will also visit Rovinj, where he will be presented with an honorary citizen's charter.
