ISTRIA COUNTY PREFECT DISAPPOINTED WITH STATEMENTS BY SLOVENE POLITICIANS

PULA, Aug 30 (Hina) - Istria County Prefect Ivan Jakovic has expressed his disappointment over moves and statements by certain Slovene politicians ahead of parliamentary elections in Slovenia.

"Croatian-Slovene relations cannot be hostage to election campaigns and ambitious extremists," Jakovcic said at a press conference in the northern Adriatic city of Pula on Monday.

Jakovcic said that unlike the land border between Croatia and Slovenia, which was defined by the Badidenter Commission, the sea border was yet to be determined and that it was obvious that the governments of the two countries were unable to settle the issue by themselves.

"There have been too many hard words and statements claiming Croatian territory," he said, adding that the process of international arbitration should be immediately initiated in order to define the sea border in the Bay of Piran.

"I call on all those in the European Union who wish to help us to initiate the process of international arbitration, because any procrastination will enable extremists to make further moves and attract attention," Jakovcic said.

Jakovcic said he expected a further escalation of relations in the autumn when the destruction of illegally built houses in Istria, mainly owned by Slovene citizens, will continue.
