LJUBLJANA, Aug 23 (Hina) - Slovene Interior Minister Rado Bohinc said in Ljubljana on Monday that he would write to his Croatian counterpart to draw his attention to the inappropriate treatment of controversial Jozko Joras by Croatian police last weekend.

"Joras will be charged with misdemeanour for putting up roadblocks," Bohinc said at a press conference after meeting Joras at his request. The behaviour of the Croatian police, who took ID cards from three of Joras's friends last Friday, was "unnecessary and inappropriate", he added.

Bohinc said that in his letter to Croatian Interior Minister Marjan Mlinaric he would request that the proceedings against the men be immediately suspended.

The three friends of Joras's were caught in an attempt to smuggle building material for Joras from Slovenia into Croatia, which prompted Joras to stage a protest at the Secovlje border crossing and block the road there.

Speaking at the press conference in Ljubljana, Joras apologised for causing a delay at the border crossing, but added that he would continue his protest.

Joras said that the aim of his protest was "to urge the Slovene government to carry out its duty towards 60 Slovene citizens" in hamlets south of the Dragonja river. "If they don't do it, Slovene fishermen will be deprived of their livelihood, because the Bay of Piran will be divided in half and the fundamental human rights of 60 Slovenes will be at risk," he added.

Asked if his protest had anything to do with his running for a seat in the Slovene parliament as a member of the Slovene Popular Party, Joras said that it was true that he was a member and a candidate of this party, but that his campaign had been going on for 14 years.

An opinion poll published by the Slovene commercial television network POP TV shows that Slovenes have differing views about Joras, with some regarding him as a national hero and others as a provocateur enjoying media attention.
