Under the law, Slovene is the official language and oral and written communication is carried out in this language. In some communities in which ethnic Hungarians and Italians live, they are allowed to use their mother tongue, too.
There are not so many novelties in the new law but one of the most interesting points is the provision defining Slovene as one of the official languages in the European Union.
A body for monitoring the enforcement of the law will be set up within the Culture Ministry.
