HND ISSUES MESSAGE FOR INTERNATIONAL PRESS FREEDOM DAY

ZAGREB, May 1 (Hina) - The Croatian Journalists' Association (HND) on Saturday issued a statement on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, May 3.
ZAGREB, May 1 (Hina) - The Croatian Journalists' Association (HND) on Saturday issued a statement on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, May 3.#L# "We remind journalists and media owners, public authorities and other participants in public life that freedom in modern democracies and in the rule of law means harmony, that is, that the freedom of one man is limited by another man's freedom," reads the statement signed by HND president Dragutin Lucic. The HND therefore calls on journalists and editors to ensure public and free presentation of one's views. Addressing the authorities, the HND warns that the recent Media Law gives reason to believe that the strongest public medium is still managed by politics rather than civil society. "We are also warning about the unacceptable way of management of state-owned media like Slobodna Dalmacija and Vjesnik dailies". The HND points to the fact that the highest representatives of public authority are withholding information from reporters and to an increasing number of attacks on reporters, as well as to the destructive effects of sensationalism, misinformation, xenophobia in the media and the violation of ethnic, religious, sexual and other human rights.
