ZAGREB, April 22 (Hina) - The Croatian Parliament continued its session on Thursday with a debate on a Government-sponsored bill proposing establishment of a National Education Examination Centre and introduction of a national school-leaving examination.#L# The State Secretary at the Ministry of Science and Education, Zelimir Janjic, said that the Examination Centre would conduct external evaluation of the education system and organise the implementation of national school-leaving exams. Janjic said that Croatia at the moment did not have an institution that would evaluate the achievements of students and schools, for which reason it lagged behind developed European countries. Janjic also drew attention to the fact that only 30 per cent of university students completed their studies, that the studies lasted 7.7 years on average and that only seven per cent of students complete their studies in time. For this reason, he said, it was necessary to systematically monitor the work of students, teachers and heads of educational institutions. During the debate, all parliamentary parties supported the bill, saying that the evaluation of education by such an institution might motivate students to study for the sake of knowledge rather than for the sake of grades. They stressed the need for standardising the education system and evaluation criteria. (Hina) vm
