Sanader spoke at a conference at which the Council presented the set
of measures. Also present was President Stjepan Mesic and about 400
business people.
The PM also commented on some politicians' claims that one should not
rush into the European Union and that Croatia would not be ready for
admission in 2007 or 2008.
"Let's be Euro-realists, there is no alternative to the road to the
EU," he said, adding that the government would do everything for
Croatia to obtain a positive opinion of its membership application and
to be granted candidate status in June.
Sanader said it was also time for Europe to give Croatia clear signals
and thus show, among other things, that Croatia could be a success
story and a model for other countries in this part of Europe.
The director of the World Bank's regional office for Croatia, Bulgaria
and Romania, Annand Seth, said that Croatia, which aspired to become
the "tiger of the Adriatic", needed a growth strategy which, instead
of supporting spending, incited the private sector and exports.
