ZAGREB, Feb 17 (Hina) - The Croatian customs workers' union on Tuesday
again accused former finance minister Mato Crkvenac and a former
ministry secretary, Gorenka Bulj, of abusing their office and
authority, and announced that it would press new charges against the
two.#L#
Speaking at a news conference, union leader Zeljko Popovic and union
commissioners from customs offices in Zagreb, Osijek, Zadar, Sibenik
and Pula dismissed Crkvenac's recent claims that the union was
currying favour with the new government by leveling accusations
against him.
By changing the law on civil servants and the customs service,
Crkvenac prevented the promotion of customs workers with many years of
service and employed politically suitable personnel, union
representatives said.
Some 200 workers were employed in customs during Crkvenac's and Bulj's
terms, and some 130 department heads were given positions without one
day of previous service in customs, union officials said.
They also announced new charges against Crkvenac and Bulj, stating the
union demanded the adoption of rules for promotion in the customs
service that would be in line with international standards.
