The delegation consisting of 23 ambassadors to UNESCO have arrived in
Croatia to see some locations which are on UNESCO's World Cultural
Heritage List and get acquainted with measures the authorities are
taking to preserve those sights, the Croatian ambassador Ritz
explained adding that there were six Croatian locations on that list,
According to Ritz, Croatia is among few countries having this number
of locations under the protection of UNESCO. For instance, Croatia is
on the equal footing with Egypt in this regard.
In Split, the delegation visited the Diocletian Palace, the city's
cathedral and the gallery with works of a renowned sculptor, Ivan
Mestrovic, and in Trogir the diplomats toured the Cathedral of St,.
Lawrence which is being renovated. The city of Trogir as a whole was
added to the World Heritage List on 6 December 1997.
The purpose of the visit is to promote the Croatian valuable heritage
as well as to attract a higher number of tourists, in which the 23
ambassadors from all continents can help us, Ambassador Rotz said.
Croatia is still known in the world for the war events (from 1990s),
and it is high time that we presented our real picture. Therefore,
this visit is very important in bids to accomplish objectives of our
foreign policy and change our picture presenting Croatia's real state
of affairs, she said.
The next destination of the UNESCO delegation is Dubrovnik where the
ambassadors will be able to enjoy the fiesta on the occasion of St.
Blaise, the city's patron saint.
