THE HAGUE/ZAGREB, Jan 14 (Hina) - The priority of the International
Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) in 2004 is to
accomplish goals defined by UN Security Council Resolution 1503,
namely to take adequate measures so as to complete first-instance
trials by 2008, and appeals proceedings by 2010, the ICTY's spokesman,
Jim Landale said on Wednesday.#L#
The accomplishment of those goals requires full cooperation of
countries in the area of the former Yugoslavia concerning attempts to
arrest and extradite war-time Bosnian Serb leaders Radovan Karadzic
and Ratko Mladic as well as retired Croatian general, Ante Gotovina,
Landale told his first news conference in 2004.
The ICTY will continue working on rendering national courts capable of
trying middle- and low-profile war crimes suspects, while the
Hague-based tribunal will direct efforts to trials of military and
political leaders, the spokesman added.
