ZAGREB, Jan 7 (Hina) - The international community's High
Representative to Bosnia-Herzegovina has accused the Muslim-led Party
of Democratic Action (SDA) and its leader, Sulejman Tihic, of
launching a dangerous campaign aimed at undermining the independence
of the judicial system in the country.#L#
Commenting on demands by Tihic and some other SDA officials for the
annulment of all appointments of judges and prosecutors made by the
High Judicial and Prosecutorial Council (HJPC), High Representative
Paddy Ashdown on Wednesday told reporters that this was a
counterproductive and very pernicious campaign.
The British diplomat dismissed the SDA's claims of
under-representation of Bosniaks (Bosnian Muslims) in the judiciary as
groundless. He said that Bosniaks accounted for 49 percent of all
appointments so far made by the HJPC led by Jan Eric Oja of Norway.
The process of appointment is still under way and it is likely that
the portion of the Bosniak staff will be higher. The High
Representative went on to say that he would do all he could to prevent
political pressure on the judiciary.
