IOM issued a press release saying that ever greater migrating
pressures were being created with globalisation, trade
liberalisation, economic integration and the widening gap between
rich and poor nations.
"IOM believes that successful migration management only exists
when it fully respects the human rights of migrants," it said in the
press release.
"The aim of managed migration is to get best for both migrants and
society, while minimising the human rights abuses associated with
irregular migration," it added.
The Geneva-based organisation "welcomes the entry into force on 1
July 2003 of International Convention of the Protection of the
Rights of All Migrant Workers and Members of Their Families."
It also "welcomes the United Nations Convention on Transnational
Organised Crime, which entered into force on 29 September 2003".
"The supplementary Protocol to prevent, suppress and punish
trafficking in persons, especially women and children and the
Protocol against Smuggling of Migrants by Land, Sea and Air due to
enter into force on 25 December 2003 and on 28 January 2004
respectively, will establish a uniform international legal
framework in the fight against trafficking in human beings and
smuggling of migrants," the news release said.
