Speaking to reporters after meeting Croatian Prime Minister Ivo
Sanader in Strasbourg on Tuesday, Schwimmer welcomed the agreement
between the new government and minorities in parliament, the policy
towards Serbs in Croatia and the new policy that advocates
bilingualism in the case of the Italian minority.
Schwimmer said he personally supported Croatia's bid to enter the EU
and NATO, adding that he hoped the country would be recognised as a
serious candidate for membership.
Sanader said he was pleased that the Council of Europe had completed
the post-monitoring process in Croatia, and expressed satisfaction
with Croatia's position in the Council.
Sanader said he had informed the secretary general of the steps his
government was taking to ensure a speedier entry into Euro-Atlantic
institutions.
