"We advocate freedom and human rights, but building a mosque in
Ljubljana at this moment is unacceptable for security reasons," SLS
representative Andrej Umek told reporters. According to him, the
building of the mosque would help the expansion of al Qaida and other
terror organisations.
According to the latest census, Slovenia has a Muslim population of
about 50,000.
Some 10,000 signatures need to be collected for the referendum to be
held. Ljubljana mayor Danica Simsic, a member of the ruling Liberal
Democrats, is against the petition.
