ZAGREB, Dec 20 (Hina) - The Zagreb City Council of the Roma National Minority on Tuesday expressed dissatisfaction with the housing conditions of Roma, notably in several Zagreb suburbs.

The housing conditions of Roma are disastrous and in some suburbs beneath human dignity, the chairman of the Council's Housing Committee, Nedjatin Kamberovski, said at a meeting marking Council Day.

Council president Nazif Memedi said about 150 Zagreb families were faced with the most difficult problems.

He said that according to statistics, Zagreb's Roma population is 2,400, but that unofficially they number about 9,000. Officially, Croatia has a Roma population of 9,400 and unofficially about 50,000.

The chairman of the Council's Status Issues Committee, Ivan Rumbak, said only 800 of 3,500 citizenship requests by Roma had been cleared and pointed to lack of coordination among ministries.

The head of the government's Office for National Minorities, Milena Kleiner, said there were no people without citizenship in Croatia and that if someone had unsolved status issues, they should contact the government.

She added Zagreb Mayor Milan Bandic had said the Roma housing issue would be settled.

Kleiner said state support for Roma in 2006 had increased considerably, up from 2.76 million kuna this year to 11.9 million kuna next year.

The Zagreb City Council of the Roma National Minority is a nonprofit institution of Roma self-government bodies which has 25 councillors.
