Del Ponte held talks with the Fund's president, Natasa Kandic.
Speaking of the Belgrade trial for war crimes committed at Ovcara, Croatia, in 1991, del Ponte said she supported the work of the Fund and that it must continue working until the main figures who had ordered the crimes were brought before justice alongside those who had committed them.
It is very important for the future of international justice that someone continue pushing national and local authorities and supervise proceedings before national courts so that these proceedings could go in the right direction, said the Hague tribunal's chief prosecutor.
It is very important that trials be fair, she said. You definitely can't have everyone brought to justice at one time, but it is important to go in the right direction, even if step by step, until proper justice has been served. I know it's difficult, but it is possible, she added.
While in Belgrade, del Ponte is also scheduled to talk to Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica and the chairman of the Serbia and Montenegro Council for Cooperation with the Hague Tribunal, Rasim Ljajic.
