THE HAGUE, Dec 10 (Hina) - The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY) on Saturday officially confirmed that Croatian General Ante Gotovina had arrived at the UN court's detention unit at Scheveningen and welcomed his arrest and transfer as a significant event for the Hague tribunal.

Speaking to Hina on the phone, spokesman Jim Landale confirmed that Gotovina was placed under the ICTY's jurisdiction shortly after 2 pm.

Gotovina's arraignment has been scheduled for 12.45 on Monday.

The procedure following arrival includes an identity check, informing Gotovina of his rights and the charges against him, a brief medical examination, and the start of talks on legal representation, said Landale, adding that Gotovina would be enabled to talk with attorneys after he informed ICTY representatives of his wishes concerning counsel.

In a statement issued after Gotovina's transfer from Spain, the ICTY said the indictment against him was issued in July 2001 and that he was arrested on December 7 this year after more than four years of evading justice.

Landale said this was a very significant moment for the ICTY and that the tribunal applauded his arrest and transfer.

He added there were no more war crimes fugitives from Croatia, and that the ICTY and the international community could now concentrate on the remaining six fugitives among the 161 accused, notably Radovan Karadzic and Ratko Mladic.

Landale reiterated the tribunal would not stop working until they were behind bars.

Attending today's extradition was a consular employee of the Croatian Embassy in The Hague, who was enabled to briefly speak to Gotovina, the Croatian foreign ministry said in a press release.

Gotovina was informed that the embassy would provide him with the necessary consular and legal aid until the status conference and during the entire proceedings.

Gotovina, who was arrested in Spain on Wednesday, asked the ministry to tell all Croatian media not to harass his family.

The next meeting between an embassy representative and Gotovina is scheduled for Monday.

He is accused on individual and command responsibility for persecution, murder, wanton destruction, deportation, forced resettlement and other inhumane treatment allegedly committed under his command and control against Serbs during and after the 1995 Operation Storm.
