The ASIL Executive Committee decided to present the medal to Meron on November 5. Explaining its decision, the Society described Meron as a leading scientist in international law, human rights and international criminal law.
The medal has been awarded since 1956 for outstanding contribution to science and achievements in international law.
Meron's second term as ICTY president expires on November 17, after which he will continue working as a judge of the tribunal's Appeals Chamber. The tribunal will elect his successor the same day, and the likeliest candidate is Meron's deputy, Italian Judge Fausto Pocar.
