WASHINGTON, Dec 8 (Hina) - Croatian war crimes fugitive Ante Gotovina was arrested thanks to very close cooperation with the Croatian authorities, the director of the Coalition for International Justice in Washington, Nina Bang-Jensen, told Voice of America on Thursday.

I know the arrest was the result of information Croatian officials submitted at the end of September, she said.

Bang-Jensen went on to say she had spoken to a number of people at the Hague war crimes tribunal who said they highly appreciated what the Croatian government had done, providing information and remaining consistent in doing so.

In similar cases the authorities often submit outdated information or governments bring it up to date, she said. In this case, however, the authorities in Zagreb were very consistent and honoured their commitments, she added.

The Coalition for International Justice is a nongovernmental organisation lobbying for the punishment of war criminals. It has been offering the UN court professional assistance for years.

Bang-Jensen said the arrest of Gotovina, the last Croatian indictee wanted by the Hague tribunal, would pave the way for the country's accession to NATO.

She said the Croatian government had taken a great risk because there were people in the country who considered Gotovina a hero. She added capitals around the world would genuinely admire what Croatia had done.

Bang-Jensen also said Gotovina's arrest in Spain would lead to the arrests of Bosnian Serb war crimes indictees Radovan Karadzic and Ratko Mladic.
