WASHINGTON, Nov 30 (Hina) - Croatia should expand the right to the restitution of seized or nationalised property to apply also to foreign nationals, Warren Miller, chairman of the US Commission for the Preservation of America's Heritage Abroad, said in an interview with the Voice of America on Tuesday.

Miller recalled that during his visit to Croatia and meeting with Prime Minister Ivo Sanader in early October he had advocated that Croatia's law regulating the restitution of property that was illegally seized during and after World War II should be expanded to apply also to foreign nationals so that they could claim back their property or seek compensation like Croatian citizens.

Miller said that after his return to Washington he was told by the Croatian ambassador to the US that the Croatian government had passed an initial decision in favour of his proposal and contacted the US State Department and some top leaders of the Jewish community in that regard.

He added that he was not familiar with the Croatia-Austria agreement on compensation for the property seized from Croatian Germans who were expelled to Austria after WWII and declined to comment on that issue.

The US Commission for the Preservation of America's Heritage Abroad is in charge of preserving historical and cultural sites of ethnic minorities, such as the Jewish minority, whose members are now US citizens. The US has signed agreements on the preservation of US heritage abroad with a number of countries, including Croatia.
